The Tale of Tails
Tinamarie DeStefans, the owner and operator of Tails of the City Dog Salon has been in business for herself since 2004 when she bought her first salon by the same name in Napa, Ca. Tinamarie comes from a background in management working in several industries. She managed Sizzler in Fairfield, Ca. for a number of years until the company filed Chapter 11 and closed down in her area. She then managed for Maidenform retail company for a few years until they too claimed bankruptcy. Tinamarie then went to work for Providian Financial and after holding a management position in their credit card call center, she ended up in the IT department in Oakland until alas, they too closed down and outsourced their remaining positions to other countries. Fortunately, Providian had given more than a year notice of their intent to sell and outsource.
So Tinamarie decided to buy her own company, no longer wanting to depend on corporations’ longevity for her career or future. After researching a number of businesses and industries, she met a woman named Angel at a friend’s barbeque. Angel went on to tell her all about her dog grooming salon in Suisun, Ca. Tinamarie was instantly interested, intrigued and absolutely thrilled that Angel was willing to train her how to groom dogs.
From there, the rest is history. After working with Angel for a few months, Tinamarie found the perfect salon for sale, Tails of the City in Napa! Being completely new to grooming and to owning a business, Tinamarie was the bather in her own salon for the first several months learning and honing her skills under the tutelage of her main groomer, Sara. Within a year they had expanded to three groomers and were one of the busiest salons in Napa.
After a gaining some experience and confidence in her entrepreneurship the plans to expand began. In June 2005, Tinamarie bought her first mobile grooming van and expanded her services all the way up to Calistoga, Ca and out to Vacaville, Ca. In October 2005 Tinamarie started construction on her Vacaville salon that would officially open in January 2006. In August 2006 she acquired her second mobile truck and expanded services to Winters, Vallejo and Rio Vista. Rio Vista was such a wonderful town so she opened a salon there in March 2008 and introduced Amber Rose to her business.
In short time, running such a large operation was taking much of her time and with being a newlywed, Tinamarie decided to start downsizing. She sold the Napa salon to one of her groomers, Shay, who still runs it to this day. She then sold the Rio salon to a woman named Deanna, who, sadly was not very successful. But luckily, Amber Rose was able to resurrect the business and flourishes on today under her own name.
Now focusing all of her attention on her Vacaville salon, Tinamarie proudly provides the services of several groomers both in the salon and her mobile salons. Servicing Vacaville, Fairfield, Dixon and American Canyon in her mobile units and has clients that come from as far as Reno and Marin to the salon just to see her and her groomers!
As for the future, Tinamarie is always looking for ways to keep Tails of the City Dog Salon fresh, new and relevant. Could a grooming school be in the future for Tails? Let us know if you think this would be a good idea. If the public demand is there, Tinamarie would love to pass on her knowledge and skills to all those who love animals and want to groom them properly, safely and beautifully!
